ADM3A 2994"The" ? Which one is "The" ? I found a number of them, with contradictory statements, or comments that they didn't know, or which said nothing at all about it.. The most popular seems to be "American Dream Machine," and a distant second is "Addressable Display Monitor." Proper user of curses did this without the user having to deal with it. That is, an "Insert Line" to curses would use the feature, if it existed, or redraw, if it didn't. Some versions did partial redraws if, for example, the terminal had "erase to end of screen" it would do so, then just rewrite the part that had been erased. I wrote termcap entries for a half dozen terminals, and the ones with line insert-delete worked notably better once I added those features... *IF* the programmer took advantage of the capabilities inherent in curses. If they didn't, you ended up seeing (as you say) a lot of full screen redraws, even when the terminal could do better. The only program I recall really using it well was an editor which I disliked a lot, but sometimes used anyway because it worked so much quicker over a 1200 dial up than the others which didn't. A missed experience. Not one I'd want to repeat, though. The Pankian Metaphor 2995 Heat flowing against the temperature gradient? Where's the heat pump? The "greenhouse" isn't *that* good at preventing... - Bill
