The libertarians are all well and good, but I wonder how many of them think that getting rid of the EPA and FDA and OSHA are a good idea, and how many of them just think that the above agencies should simply be completely overhauled. I am in favor of the overhaul point of view; all three agencies were originally designed to provide protections on life, liberty, and-or property, though they have expanded their powers as the civil service sector is often wont to do. The FDA should be in charge of punishing enbreasties that introduce harmful substances in our food and pharmaceuticals (infringing on right to life), if those harmful substances are misrepresented as being safe. OSHA should be in charge of punishing enbreasties that require employees to work in unsafe conditions (infirnging on right to life) when providing safe work conditions is no significant economic burden. Note that I say punishing, not preventing. Establishment of case law regarding punishment of offenders is at least as effective as composing regulation regarding prevention of offenses. These agencies should not be able to impose sanctions on their own, but should bring cases in federal court via the Attorney General's office and have to meet prosecutorial standards of proof in trial, with the judicial system in charge of deciding appropriate punishment.
