Perhaps not for real big stuff, but there are PIC chips and PIC projects for real time computing. I have just built an simple adaptor to allow an PC ethernet card to go in my Atari. I have a PIC based mouse controller for same coming along so I can use a PS-2 mouse.....

Or my favourite, Hercules that lets me have more "virtual" mainframes to play with than I could ever dream of in real life... MVS 3.8, VM-370 , Music, Linux. just a pity no zVM Hobbyist.
