Arpa address 3488re: if there were as few as *100 mainframe hosts*(?) connected to the arpanet on then 1jan83 cut-over to internetworking ... then the internal network Manuals vs. user guides I'm unsure what direction the GNU and documentation efforts have taken, but when I was at AT&T, they had a nice hierarchy for... would have had nearly ten times as many mainframe host-nodes (on that date as the arpanet had connected mainframes). those nearly 1000 mainframes connected to the internal network ... on 1jan83, the internal network didn't actually pbutt 1000 mainframe nodes until jun83 would have had on the order of 50,000 connected "terminals" (mostly 3270s) and there would have possibly been somewhere between 100,000 employees and 200,000 employees with email capability. just the us hone datacenter alone (providing online, interactive vm370 based service for sales, marketing and field people in the us) was pushing upwards of 40,000 defined "users" in the early 80s (of course the branch offices had a much higher ratio of "users" to "terminals" than many of the plant or development sites; in the early 80s, a branch office might only have a few remote 3270 terminals that would be shared between 20-250 people). there was some celebration with pbutting 1000th nodes ... they had these desk things made up with a small clear plastic tripod holding a clear plastic sphere with a stylized map of the world inside ... having a few dots representing nodes and lines connecting them ... with the logo 1000 nodes (I have one in my desk drawer). from long ago and far away ... preparing for 1000th node Just got the VNET 1000 node materials back from the vendor.. Wish that you could see them .... I think that they look GREAT!!!!! We have a small 8 1-2 x 11 poster for insert into a notepad binder.. a 11 x17 wall poster, a 3 x 5 paperweight w-a reduced version of poster in lucite..and the desk ornament... the poster has a picture of the desk ornament with the globe and a 'network' (actually a constellation)...in blue light with a dark background... I would like to get a list of candidates from you for the desk ornament which will be given to major contributors of VNET over the years... Arpa address 3489 actually there are two, somewhat separate heterogeneous capability provided by gateways ... one is somewhat the technology-protocol heterogeneous ... and the other is the administrative heterogeneous. while the internal network... --
