This has nothing to do with the US, just my experience. I have had an interest in computers for years, and once worked with them in a peripheral way, anyway, my family tells me that I should get with it, and use internet banking.. My experience with security flaws in systems make me cautious, but I decided to experiment, got onto my banks internet site, (using the M$ side, as recommended), got a message on the manner of which `Checking for something' everything waited, and waited, machine still working, but nothing happening. Hum. Try the Linux side, Firefox (which seems to work with even the craziest sites), message `Checking for something', everything slowwws down, system up, nothing happening. S*** that. Later in the week, one of the daughters has friends visiting when I arrive, and I am telling one of them of my experience. `Oh, I worked there for a while.. Disaster waiting to happen. I left'. Modern life is like being a member of a herd of gnu crossing a river, crocodiles kill off the first, lions kill off the stragglers, life is crowded in the middle, but safer.

Right, right .... explains not being able to converse and also do something requiring thought. I can't listen to music and at the same time do anything requiring thought...

PS, Lynn was making the point a while ago about the rate of change in hardware. Marx's `Das Kapital' tried to theorize about how changes in technology create changes, and forced further changes in society, Marx tried to extend this to show that genuinely socialist system would take over (In my opinion, forcing the original theories into his preferred world outlook), but that was technology working fairly slowly, the frantic pace at the moment will create a logjam (to make an analogy) that may crash the system..
