rpl "Heroes"

Great...just great...I delibrately avoided saying absolutely NOTHING about what happens in "Heroes" (though I was tempted to comment about how it is clearly meant as a "tribute" to the REAL American soldiers out there)...exactly because you were complaining about a lack of "spoilers"...

rpl Well, there are exceptions to every rule...I guess they just go by "instinct...

Then what do you go and do? You spoil it yourself! Worse, "one of the long-running characters dies in that double-parter" is perhaps THE most worst "spoil" that anyone could make...in terms of a TV series, "losing a main character" is about the biggest event that a plot could present...and you happily announce it without "spoiler"...

Oh, well...at least you didn't say that it's General Hammond (of Texas) that gets end...joke! Joke! It isn't...I'm just being silly there! ;)

Yeah, "Atlantis" is your basic "spin-off series"...but I can't say too much, though, as it literally does "spin off" from a plotline in the original series...

It's on "Sky" over here...which is basically "Fox", as it's also owned and run by Rupert Murdoch's "News Corporation"...and all it ever does, really, is show imported American series (and then "re-runs" them) like Simpsons, surpise! - "Fox" programmes (well, of course, they probably get them all for free, as it's all the same parent company)...though, "Stargate SG-1" is an exception there, as that's MGM, not Fox...so, that doesn't make for a particularly good example, in that individual case...

No, no...that just sounds like you had a crap "DJ" at the "disco"...who was probably just too broke to buy the latest records, so was still playing those he bought last year...Hoping no-one would notice ;)...

As music is actually one area where there are generally absolutely no "delays" at all...

Because, basically, the reason for the "delays" between releases around the world is simple practicality...if you're selling a Hollywood movie, then the usual way to "plug" it is to grab your "star" - let's say Keanu Reeves - and then send them to do every single "chat show" on TV and radio that you can manage to get them on...

But the "flaw" in this "plan", of course, is that Keanu Reeves cannot simultaneously be in America, Canada, Europe, Japan, etc., etc. all at the same time...hence, the "trick" - which is the actual underlying pragmatic reason for these "staggered release delays" - is to release the movie in America and then get Keanu to do every America chat show to promote it...then, once he's done that, send him to Europe - where the "staggered release" coincidentally means the movie comes out in the cinemas, just after Keanu has completed his "grand tour of every chat show in America" - and then Keanu goes around every European chat show...and so on...

The underlying purpose of the "staggered release" world-wide is simply so that they can make sure that their "star" is on every single major "chat show" in every single country on Earth, at the appropriate times...so that the movie gets FULL "star-studded" promotion...

There's also a secondary reason linked to that: If you release in America and it flops big-time, then you can cancel all the multi-million dollar "promotion" that you were going to have in Europe and Japan...and then switch to "damage limitation mode"...trying to only lose $5 million, rather than $500 million on your "Waterworld" extravaganza (you can't get back the production costs, but you can get back some of the "promotion" expenses...you know, no sense sending Keanu to Japan anymore...though, this strategy isn't always perfect because some movies are "flops" in America but then "mbuttive" in Europe or Japan...and it seems impossible to really accurately "predict" what will or won't work...but with such big money involved, the tendency is to "pull the plug" as fast as possible)...

But the really big movies - guaranteed sell-outs, no chance of "flop" - often give up this "staggered release" entirely...going for a "same day international release date" for the entire world (something like "Independence Day", of course, HAD TO be released July 4th absolutely everywhere, for reasons far too obvious to labour in detail ;)...and the basic "trick" there is that it's such a "sure success", in their minds, that they feel confident that it doesn't need Keanu rushing about everywhere to talk to everyone (he'll probably still be made to do it around America, anyway...but it's not part of the "grand plan" in promoting it :)...

Anyway, such problems don't apply to music...no-one much is interesting in interviewing music stars so much (well, it's easy to come up with an interesting interview with a movie star...Tom Hanks appears and you just ask something like "So, what was it like playing a disabled sea captain abducted by aliens?" and then he'll tell you all about how the ship they were filming on sank on the third day of filming...and how he almost watered because of being stuck in the wheelchair...or some equally banal but "pbuttes the time in an amusing way" ancedotal story...but what do you ask a musician? "What's your favourite type of guitar?" "Did anything funny happen while recording the song?" (single word answer: "no" ;)...unless they do "other things" then a musician just ain't worth interviewing really :)...and all their "promotion" is done via "music videos" and "contravertially" punching someone at an award ceremony or calling Bush "a privates" or something like that (which, to my mind, is merely a statement of fact, so there's nothing "contravertial" nor "slanderous" about it whatsoever ;)...

Though, fair play to when Jarvis chickener jumped up on stage while Michael Jackson was doing some "I am Jesus" stage act, where he was "curing lepers" and was nailed to a cross or something...that - even for non-Christians - was all grossly and highly offensive stuff from Whacko Jacko that I fully agreed with Jarvis chickener's stance that running on stage and pulling a "Moony" to the audience vastly improved the whole thing no end...and the contention that Jarvis "pushed over a kid" was totally nonsense, as the video footage clearly shows he did no such thing...but "King Michael" didn't like having his whole "I am more famous than Jesus, Adore me!" stage act ruined by a geeky-looking British pop star and his broken NHS prescription glbuttes...which, of course, was exactly why it was highly appropriate that he DID pull the "Moony" and completely ruin Michael's stage act...

Anyway, music isn't a problem for "delays", like movies and other things...they don't usually bother with "staggered release" because, like, for what reason?

No, if that "disco" was playing old hits, then that's either because the DJ couldn't afford any newer records...or it was trying to be delibrately "retro"...or something like that...

Or, perhaps, in the mid '70s - between the neolithic and the precambrian eras, as it was- it really did take that long to get the records delivered over the Atlantic...had they invented the wheel by this period? Actually, I should stop joking about the "stone age" thing, as I was born in the "mid '70s"...

Anyway, whatever troubles they used to have delivering spices by Viking longboat across the perilous Atlantic - full of "sea monsters", as it was then - in the mid '70s, none of that is the case anymore...well, somewhat obviously, really...as all the "groovy hip cats" are now, apparently, "downloading" their favourite "MP3s" into their "iPod" players and such, of course...

Naw, sorry...that was just a penniless or crap DJ at that "disco"...or perhaps he just left all his newer "vinyl" records too close to a fire or other heat source...and they warped, making them quite unplayable...

Burn, baby, burn...it's was a "Disco Inferno", allegedly...obviously, they didn't follow the "health and safety regulations" too closely...

Good; I wouldn't particularly listen to "net-copping"...

snip ... If you look (and clbuttify) some of the various "insurgencies" I have seen (the clbuttifications are from my viewpoint at the time): Yugoslavia...

But it was a genuine "kick myself" thing that I just completely forgot about adding the "spoiler warning" (and, ordinarily - head screwed on the right way that morning - I would have put it in :)...

So, "personal snit"...actual genuine apology...

The above, if you will, is just me "making a mental note" aloud not to go and do it again :)...

Beth :)
