Cerf and Kahn receive Turing award 83
First device driverhow to get started says... There is a fairly decent book (several editions out, try and get the latest), called Linux Device Drivers by Rubini that serves fairly well...
Latest news about mainframe i gave presentation at fall '86 european share (SEAS) meeting ... was on the isle of jersey. "share europe" (seas) url: from above... About three quarters of the way down the page is the origin of the line. As a boy growing up in Texas, I was told a more colorful version of the story, sans Mexicans, set in the early 1920s: A bunch of cowboys got drunk up in Waco and got into tussles with the local farmboys, and a general riot broke out. The sheriff telegraphed the nearest Ranger company, down in Austin; when the train arrived that evening, a single Ranger got off, and when the sheriff noted "They only sent one Ranger" the Ranger replied "You only got one riot." The Ranger went to a hardware store and picked up 100 feet of chain and a case of padlocks; he locked one end loop of the chain to a big old oak tree, and started arresting rioters one by one. He'd pull his man over to the chain, throw a loop of chain around his wrist, and padlock him in. After he'd pulled in two or three dozen rioters, things died down naturally. ObAFC: I don't think Turing, Cerf, or Kahn were in Waco that weekend. -- Rich Alderson "ASCII ribbon "You get what anybody gets. You get a lifetime." x HTML mail and --rest, of the Endless postings
