Morten Reistad 80286 was released in 1982, MC68000 (which, IMHO, is a much more advanced product and thus better suited for a "real" operating system) in 1979. I have no idea of their relative...

That shows the difference in views. We wanted real systems at home. The hardware wasn't that far from being able to support such software systems. After all, an 80286 is a more capable processor than a PDP11, not to mention a PDP7.

We wanted capable systems where we didn't have to program in rudimentary languages straight to the bare metal all the time. Mulbreastasking is a part of this.

We saw that; but saw that the industry was moving towards a hardware push and inadequate, proprietary systems. We had already been burned by 1983.

QNX was able to do a decent performance on an 8086 with around half a megabyte of memory.

They appreciate the Internet, don't they? Or being able to switch windows? And they would love to have a more secure system.

To be frank; it is a lot smaller task to set someone up with a modern unixy OS than it ever was with e.g. a commodore machine.

My favourite for desktop systems remains the mac.

Yes; but it was all done outside a mainstream that was vigorously pulling in the opposite direction.

This may be a tad off-topic, but I'm curious which BBS systems you used and-or liked back then. I was...

I began calling bulletin boards in 1985. I never called a BBS outside of Sweden, however, so my sense of what is common...

Amen. But you all seem to have a pretty rosy picture of the BBS world. I was there, and we all embraced the Internet (and usenet) when it came; and never looked back. There is a reason for it.

If you know who it is, try a libel suit on the right issue. Or just go have a talk with the person. Two large, bearded persons with motorcycles at your door sometimes makes wonders with such imbeciles.
