LCD's usually have a backlight; this is the light you actually see. When you look at the electronics it is often pretty easy to find it, and it is completely separate from the rest of the logic, so it can be outfitted with a switch or a dimmer.

Advanced consumer apparatus has become a lot better in this respect, but I fear the music-video industry is embarking on another standards war.
