Data communications over telegraph circuits 1925I don't know how else to explain this. See Lars post in this thread. He explains an aspect of differences. Oh, you're yakking about some scifi book? Which one? No, it wasn't. It was no longer providing what customers needed. MaBell told Kotok in 1970 or so that what DEC wanted done couldn't be done. And then Kotok gave them a demonstration. Since there was an explosion w.r.t. tech and comm from 1970-1984, ATT dragging it's feet and not allowing compebreastors to provide that comm service caused people to get peeed off. That is why the monopoly suit became a reality. If ATT had not peeed so many people off, there wouldn't have been a lawsuit. People don't give a poo about a monopoly until that monopoly stops provided the product and-or service that customers need.
And ATT was obdurate about evolving and had been for more than 10 years. Data communications over telegraph circuits 1926 Did customers really need to deal with multiple vendords who pointed the finger at each other when anything went wrong? With hardware that was promised to be compatible but wasn't? With vendors who... No. ATT peeed enough people off that government had to step in. Effective means responding to the customer needs and wants in a timely manner. ATT had lost all of that. To prevent others from providing these products, ATT resorted heavy-handed tactics, which how companies get taken to monopoly court. BAH Subtract a hundred and four for e-mail.
