The culture was Norse. Iceland was a republican renegade state to the Norwegian monarchy; created as a consequence of the purges of Erik I "Bloodaxe" and the similar situation in Denmark. This schism can still lead to fistfights. The two states of Norway, Denmark, and anonther four Things that hadn't made a country yet was pretty fluid. The fixed points were the trade posts and the legal Things; which for all practical purposes were the same place; and there were a dozen of them in the Norse culture around ad 1000. Now we have evidence from archelogical finds in Newfoundland that some Norse lived there at least for a handful of winters. They were probably republican renegades from Iceland. The Norse history is proven correct on all testable points. It is a far more descriptive name than what Columbus gave, without being overly racist. It is a distinct name from the Norse for Inuit. Just the name "SkrÌÏlingar" is good proof that the Norse came in contact with the American Indians.
