Exactly. The most efficient way would have been to fix Michsit. But I decided it wasn't fixable. It's folklore was too entrenched.

Oh, but with a TECO macro you can read the data and write a temporary file that you can eyeball. There are all kinds of tricks you can do as long as it's ASCII. poo, you can even sort your temp file any which way you want and scan it. Note that eyeball can also mean a quick and dirty FORTRAN or COBOL program if you need calculations done and are not a black belt in TECOese. :-)

I will never be able to understand this atbreastude. Your customer is your best data. If you design the product so that the customer never gets the parity bits, all you get back for feedback is GIGO.

You can make so much more money and useful stuff if your customer is your source of product requirement. Their implementation design will always be off the wall because it is design specifically for their site and usage and won't ever extrapolate to a general public. But they are also the expert of what is needed in hard-software to buttist them to get their work done.
