On New Year's Day there was a protest march of stockbrokers, demonstrating against new regulations from Beijing. This follows some spectacular Enron style business failures, so from what I saw the changes were warranted. The papers were not sympathetic to the brokers.

Beijing is under a lot of pressure, both domestic and international, to float the yuan and deregulate some of the stock market rules restricting capital flow out of the country. Whether that will translate into a "legislature for sale", as it did in Nevada during the silver days in the 1880s and 1890s remains to be seen. People in China want to make money, and they don't want the government in the way (I can sympathize with the atbreastude), so there may be some problems of dubious laws being put into effect by way of private financial incentives.
