week before fall share ('68 boston) meeting, i was suppose to have a HASP discussion with somebody at cornell. I flew into la guardia and then had to go over to marine terminal to catch a flight to Ithaca. it turned out to be dc3.

it was hot, humid august and a thunder storm was in the area ... so we were held on the ground for an hr ... hot, humid, no air conditioning and thick smell of airline fuel in the air. we finally took off, but about half-way to elmira ... hit a severe thunderstorm. i got the most airsick ever in my life (severe turbelance and lightening all around ... even seeming to strike the plane). i wobbled off the plane in elmira and went in search of a motel. next morning i got a rental car and drove to Ithaca.

couple sites mentioning army cargo version of dc3

we were recently going thru a pile of old letters that my wife's mother had written her mother from china in the 40s. one letter describes being given 3hrs evacuation notice in nanking. they were bundled on an army cargo plane and arrived at tsingtao airfield after dark ... had a bunch of trucks and cars rounded up to light the airfield.

there is another letter by my wife's father from tsingtao to both sets of parents apologizing for not telling them that his wife (their daughter) was pregnant and announcing that she had just given birth to a girl in tsingtao harbor (envelope postmarked "USS Repose").
