My sister just asked me for ideas for her son. He has a project buttigned where he's supposed to "shadow" somebody who does work he is interested in learning. Do you ever have a shadow?

I didn't intend to cast dispersions on your methods. I've e-met people who believe a thingie exists and works just because they saw it "work" on their TTY screen.

Yup. That all theory, no testing is the Number One problem in the world.

Yup. I have been trying to get a tree cut down since August. The PHBs keep telling me that the tree is perfectly healthy, belongs to the town, and will cost the power company lots of money to cut down. It's a 20" oak that has the blight, is dropping dead 4" diameter branches and tilts a little bit more after each windstorm. Not a single leaf on it was all green last summer. I also have 20 other trees that need to come down but I'll have to wait until they fall down because all of them are perfectly healthy, owned by the town, and will cost the power company lots of money to cut them down. All of these trees will take the whole wire system down when the fall; that's phone, cable, electric and whatever goes through the fiber.

Or regulations imposed by the state and interpreted by the people at each pumping station. Our state specified the amount of chlorine that had to be added. So each pumping station obeyed the rule. It took years for whomever to figure out that the spec was a figure for the whole water system, not each station.

Yup. YOu aren't getting any contact with the kids who do want to do that work.

That's why I came to the conclusion that everybody should have to work for 2 years on a farm. Very few kids are exposed to practical work these days. It's a side effect of having a middle clbutt economy. I'm also beginning to think that this is the Achilles' heel of economic well-being.
