No, I'm not THAT important (yet) :( The boss's current method of dealing with newbies is toss them into something and watch the results, then tweak. It's been surprisingly effective - I'm not sure if that's because we're all weirdos or because the fear of getting fired gets them to *think* for a change.

Depends - some consulting engineers I've dealt with can barely think. I have one pump station project where the spec litterally say I'm supposed to modify the SCADA system 'as needed', but fails to indicate what work is being done or what control schemes are used, or who's doing what.
500 pages of soil, pavement, concrete, water stuff. About 50 total on electric (including ITTFlygt's standard boilerplate spec and a long yap about VFDs that screams "I WANT MY ABB!!"). I won't bother to mention the consultant's background...
