IBM 610 workstation computer 3407It would preclude running a x86; the smallest physican instance I know of a x86 processor is just the machine I described below; the Via Eden C3 at around stepping 6. IBM 610 workstation computer 3410 No CPU in a multi-CPU system can wait. Consider the case where the "owning CPU" is hung. Now you've just head-wedged your whole system for no reason; and... The processor itself is a tad wider than my thumbnail including the packaging. If we want something smaller we probably need something based on ARM. IBM 610 workstation computer 3408 I do what I can not to get them wet. They are mounted on the rear wall of the electrics panel; probably the dryest...
I measured it thoroughly now. That is with tops20 chugging along at a load of 0.1-0.5; or about the processing power of a real KL10B. The main processor will then step between 266 and 400 Mhz. The load at 12.4 volts input (the lowest voltage that gives an exact 12v to the power busses) is slightly below 0.5A. (The measuring thingy I borrowed is old and analogue, and designed for loads of 10A and more). If it idles completely it is down to slightly below 0.4A, or below 5 watts, but the (x86) processor is then halted and the bus is down to 133 Mhz. When I exercise it with a kernel compile, and lots of network traffic, ir climbs to 0.85A. Writing the flash card requires some power. A monitor build takes 65 minutes, or around 4200 joules of energy. No, unfortunatly the board is 17x17x3.3 cm, or 7x7x1.5 inches. Everything is on the board though, disc is included. I can fit as much as 4 flash cards; and another 5 usb sticks. It has two ethernets (one for linux, and one for tops20) and a serial port (tops20 console!). Until someone protests I nominate it the most energy-efficient Tops20 known to the universe. If solar panels weren't so expensive I might put it in the garden shed and run it on a wifi link and some solar power, and put up a web page on it. -- mrr
