Once upon a time, when I was the fierce guard of all TOPS-10's specs in the Notebooks, the Mill had a fire alarm go off. Every new hire was told about estimates of how fast the Mill would burn down which went from a couple minutes to maybe a couple of hours if it were a slow fire.

The alarm went off, all the women in the office (we were on 12-1) were grabbing their stuff and getting out. And I looked at the 50 DECtapes that had months of typing time on them. I dumped my trashcan contents on the floor, shoveled 25 of the tapes into the trashcan and ran out of the building with the tape ends flying out behind me. I had no time to lick the LBTs and restick them to the tape. (The other 25 were the n-1 edit of the 25 I took.

Boy, did I get kidded....until corporate handed down an edict to computer operations to put an offsite backup plan into place and implement it. The kidding turn into unpleasant womaning but only for a little while.

John, didn't we call these the black tapes? When Magee moved to the monitor group, the black tapes moved to the black packs?
