for a long time the one shipped with turbo pascal was extremely popular ... including a lot of tweaks and features down by internal workers (available internal from one of the IBMPC...

There is also a point about Unix not being the user interface. There is nothing much beyond writing basic text files in the Unix core system.

All the actual user interface layers are in separate manuals usually. And by that point you have several alternatives to choose from already, starting from the command prompt ... (hey, is it time for a new sh-csh-ksh-bash fight yet)?

I do think that the "CDE 1.0 User's Guide" I have here is fairly good for an end-user manual. However, it doesn't really advertise the fact that CDE usually runs on top of Unix ... and if you happen to meet a Sun workstation with OpenLook, it doesn't help you much. Nor with GNOME or KDE.

Whole-system end-user Unix manuals aren't at all common. Now where did I put my last copy of "Using your HP-UX Workstation", I think it was one such ...

The hard part is that the users appear to prefer it this way.

That doesn't follow. It may be off-the-shelf but that doesn't suffice to make it newbie-proof. Granted that the "someone who knows more" is usually easier to find, sure, but the need doesn't go anywhere.

Haven't you noticed how some people have a hard time coping with their friends, relatives, etc, asking for help with their Windows PC?

The fact that after replacing the operating environment with something fundamentally different but superficially sort of similar (like Linux with KDE or Gnome on top, for example), they often require less buttistance, not more, should be the key point here.

Well, sure, if they don't want to sell it...
