In other words, anecdotal evidence from people who have a vested interest in painting a certain picture. (Not that it's easy to find anyone without a vested interesting in some kind of picture.)
I've seen quite a few of these claims disproven by the facts. Not that I think most of the Doctors are dishonest, but if I had to write one big honkin' check for a single expense I'd probably remember that much better than all the rent and payroll checks I'd cut. (Much like the claim that ERs are swamped during full moons falls apart when you look at the actual stats. All it takes is one busy night when there IS a full moon to lock this notion into place because the unusual is given more weight than the usual.)

Thanks, in part, to the hint from the insurance companies that their rates will go down. Who do you think keeps claiming that there are all these multi-million-dollar settlements going on? (The State of Florida entertained a limit bill many years ago based on insurance company figures. It died when the facts about actual settlements came out - seems acutal payouts are much, much, less than the initial awards reported in the popular press thanks to judges and the threat of appeal.) -Wm
