Very interesting discussion so far.....everyone's remarks have been pretty much on target re: libraries & staff atbreastudes.

I would like to find a library which has an "advisory board" (or boards) composed of interested residents who have subject matter expertise in order to help them select new books on particular subject areas like computers, gardening, auto repair, photography, medical, etc. just to name a few ... as well as which of the "old" books to keep in the collection and which to discard ... and finally, which periodicals related to the specific topic are most worthwhile.

This seems to make a lot of sense, especially given how libraries are always complaining about limited resources (shelf space, $$$, etc.)

That is probably the tipoff as to why it won't happen: it makes sense.

That's what I said. You want tell other people how to do the work instead of doing it yourself. Your head event is counted. Libraries try to save money. If they have a staff...

Whenever I have mentioned this to various librarians, the atbreastude has always been that "we know best". I respect their profession but from what I see when I visit the library and try to find a book or magazine on a particular topic that's not necessarily the case. Or conversely, see all of the outdated worthless crap that sits on the shelf but never gets used.

No, not at all. I would be very glad to pitch in and lend a hand on one or more...

Instead, I wonder how many of the book & periodical buying decisions are based upon which distributors gave money to the winning candidate in the last {city, county, etc.} election.

After all, why does a government enbreasty have any reason to be efficient and continually try improve its product-service ? How many libraries ever survey their patrons and-or solicit their feedback ---- and if they do, actually regard the results meaningfully ?
