Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics 842
One story that has gone down well with all such ISPs is that this connection is funded by the employer...

Do they give a reason? Unless it requires specialized software from them, and that only works on XP or OSX, it's likely they just don't want to train their service people to handle any other OSs. I've had this issue with my ISP a couple of times. I just told him he could go ahead and talk XP and I'd translate to ME.

When the put in my cable modem, they wanted me to install their software. I refused. I pointed out that it was just signals on a wire, and it was connected to a perfectly standard Ethernet card. Were they doing something funky that required translation on the PC? There was some pondering, then agreement that it was, to the PC, just a network and they went away without touching the PC itself.

Perhaps drilling down (or up?) to someone who actually understands the technical aspects of what's going over that wire would fix this. I've found that they're usually afraid of being unable to provide service than they are of any actual technical issue with the connection.

I thought that might be the case.

Good trick. Never give in.
