Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics 842
One story that has gone down well with all such ISPs is that this connection is funded by the employer, and that a dedicated firewall is part of the deal because of data sensitivity issues. Windows is only run on the INSIDE of this firewall. This is the truth for my present POE. Said firewall runs OpenBSD, but that is none of the ISP's business. Same story about dedicated firewall. Corporate-funded VPN home networks is a HUGE market here, i don't think any ISP would dare to look bad in that setting. Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics 843 And a lot of others nowadays, it seems. Except that it can be less than... I find that the cable-dsl people that meet the public come from one of two camps. Firstly, the hardware guys (and some gals, actually1) that come out and install-fix things, and the phone based support people. The hardware people are happy to connect to anything, as long as they can do a signoff for a test. Connecting a firewall box and doing a couple of pings is fine with them. They just need to put an X in the box for "connection tested OK". The support people are the ones that handle the morbutt of windows problems, virii, garbage mail etc. All the ones I have talked to are happy to leave windows alone and just test the connection from a dedicated firewall.
Another Another One Bites the Dust long ago and far away .... the dasd engineering lab (bldg 14) and dasd product test lab (bldg 15) had these "testcells" where tested stuff under development. that had some number of processes... Modern? This IS modern! -- mrr 1 It seems that the girls have discovered hardware now; specifically the generation born in the eitghties.
