87? 87? That system probably has MFM drives. (Maybe ESDI or SCSI) The oldest ATA drives that I have are from 1990. I don't think that anybody still makes MFM or ESDI drives. Well, to look for the drive: For MFM, ESDI, or old SCSI: Look for something somewhat bigger than a paperback book with two or three cables connected to it. A half height drive is about 7 x 5 x 1.5 inches in size, and a full height is about 7 x 5 x 3 inches. For ATA, IDE, or new SCSI: Look for something somewhat smaller than a paperback book with two cables connected to it. The drive size is about 5.5 x 4 x .75 inches. One of the cables should always be the power connector. It ends in white plastic connector. 4 wires, 2 black, the other 2 are usually red and yellow. A single cable is SCSI or ATA. SCSI cables are 2.5 inches wide. ATA cables are about 2 1-8 inches wide. A pair of cables is MFM, RLL, or ESDI, usually. (I don't think anyone ever did SMD or ESMD for a PC) One cable is about 1.25 inches, the other nearly 2 inches wide. These descriptions would probably cover 80% of common drive installations. Some IBM PS2 systems have totally off the wall setups, which I won't even attempt to describe. -- To reply by email, remove the garbage from the reply address.
