In case you haven't noticed, the company is incorportated (I think that is the word) and is listed on the stock exchange. This means that its tail is getting wagged by people who have absolutely no interest in ASCII preservation bits...if they even know that a thingie called ASCII exists. Take a very good look at the contents of some of the posts in this newsgroup. Kids are not getting taught the existence of ASCII, let alone what it means and how to read it. It has nothing to do about sloppiness nor caring. It has to do... You can't handle what I post here. You would never be able to handle what I've written privately.
