Long posts was: breastle screen for HLA Adventure 872It is worse than this. We have developers who do not know what sources are! It has nothing to do about sloppiness nor caring. It has to do about not knowing they don't know. Think about that. Do NOT dismiss these people as stupidos. They are the up and coming generation of developers.
Now consider the computing usage that doesn't even know that a machine language exists and this is what is run (from the EXE). Most development platforms don't even distinguish between the "source", the relocatable and the executable. Think about a future developer (a real kid) who has never encountered these three stages of producing code. My nephew, who now thinks he's going to be a developer, just wrote me and said he thought it might be useful to learn a machine language (emphasis is mine). Do you know how worrisome this is? Now take a gander at one these OT threads of ours and, if you can find it, read about the kiddies, young and old, who have absolutely no idea what ASCII is nor why it is necessary, let alone why there are standards. Now, the normal time to lose knowledge used to be generations of people which translates into decades or more. In the computing biz, this time has been reduced to variations, not generations, of CPUs. This means a lossage within 5 years or less.
