I think he deduced its existence because he volunteered to refurbish Unix systems (that should tell you about the existenece of hardware knowledge). I've rescued some CPU books from the dump. I can't decide if I should send him the CPM collection, the z80 handbook or the MC68000 textbook. If you were back to being young and foolish and just starting out in this biz, which would be more helpful to you? Just knowing that a thingie called registers is something. to go to bed. They wouldn't be able to view an IBM card and make reasonable conclusions. It's not these kids fault. Somewhere along the way, the computer biz got rotten. A newly hatched physics PhD reported that an interview with a manager hunting for a software developer informed him that software developers shouldn't know about physical laws; only knowledge about heuristics is necessary. Heuristics is my word. BAH Subtract a hundred and four for e-mail.
