That's clever. I've never seen that reaction to the "stiction" problem.

Hmm, I never tried that. I've gotten a drive going by removing it from the machine, holding it in my hand, and giving it a quick twist on its axis. The inertia of the platters would make them stay still while the remainder of the drive rotated around them, breaking the heads loose.

But I've found the easiest solution was to gently tap the drive while powering up the machine. I was once visiting my wife at her workplace, where someone had a Mac that had a stiction problem. This employee got nervous enough when I popped open the case - she almost panicked when I gently tapped the top of the drive with a fingertip while powering up the machine. But consternation turned to relief when the drive spun up. It's a good thing she didn't see me starting one of my own machines, whose hard drive housing was such a solid piece of metal that I would give it a few whacks with a screwdriver handle while powering it up.
