Looking for references to playing fightsongs on computers 4308Some of us in high school in Southern California were doing this in the spring of 1968 plus 1, with an hp9100a programmable that people were doing this with computers, and we had a radio, so we set it next to the machine, and lo and behold we could hear the innards putting out clicks as they moved data around. We noticed that when it went into a loop the clicks indeed generated tones. By varying the contents of a loop we could get different notes. After the first novelty, we dropped it. Time-consuming to work up a tune of any length, and it sounded really dippy. It was hard to control the exact pitch, since various factors could change the way the loop reiterated, such as the loop counter having to carry, etc. It needed some filtering, just clicks at 800 Hz or whatever don't make very pleasant music, and we had no way to filter it. I thought of writing some kind of player program that would take note instructions, to make coding up tunes a little easier, but the input options were kind of limited. The poor pitch control was what really end it. It set my teeth on edge, and it could not be imagined that music sounding that bad would attract girls.
