That's hardly 3000% increase. From 1933, when FDR took office, until 1950, five years after he was gone, DC probably grew by maybe 50%. Even when counting the suburbs, which continue to grow, DC and the surrounding area have NEVER experienced anything close to 3000% growth.
Now planned areas like Reston in VA and Columbia in MD, from 1970 to 2000, may have growth numbers like you're saying but not DC.

What you neglect is that a small number of people ARE controlling things like the oil industry and the defense industry that is doing what they want why the vast population of Americans sits by the sidelines.
Do you like this war? Why do we have it? Someone is making money off of it. Sure there are enough people that have wrapped themselves up in the flag and talk about the troops, etc. But, who started the ball rolling and why? Did 9-11 give someone an excuse to make Iraq the target where Afghanistan really was the target? Again, follow the money. Defense, ever since WWII, is a huge industry that must be fed or perish. OTOH, defending the country need not be an industry as it is with profits and bottom lines.
Defense of the country is one thing but when the troops are being used as low paid mercenaries to protect the oil industry that has decided that Iraq is ripe for the plucking, then one starts wondering where the checks and balances, of which the country was founded, are that we had during the Cold War. We have become the unchecked England of which we revolted against some 230 years ago.
