The last time that I saw anyone with the old "telephone company" denim bib overall was an old-timer who was called out of retirement to fix a priority circuit on a rainy sunday in 1980.

Even IBM - the last bastion of white-shirt-and blue-suit - has relaxed on this point.

For the last 30 years or so the only time that I wore a coat and tie (excluding my wedding) was when I had to appear in court, and then only because the Local Rules gave the judges the power to order such. Some are sticklers about that, some are not. That didn't mean that I didn't keep one in the closet for when it was needed, but an open-neck shirt and slacks - if clean and well groomed - is acceptable business attire outside of New York City nowadays.
