The economic equation settled at a fairly people-intensive solution to utlize the technology investment well. Just that...

Telegraphs needed fairly send people.. Yes, they could have been simplified.

getting down to the concept of an idea, the problem somewhat with the train was, and is, you have to get to the station (router box? ISP?), then you get to a station near your destination, (their ISP?), and get from that to your destination.. Further thought, once I could go to nearest big city, (in my case, Dublin), walk to where I wanted to go, and return. The long legs of the journey by train. Then most businesses (or spare part depots) moved about 5 miles out, which meant that it was better to drive.. And now those destinations are 10 miles out.. Couriers made a difference, now a depot can be almost anywhere (I think I read somewhere that Kansas was a good place for a Stateside distribution service, I think that someone built an airport out there that didn't do too much business).. Walmart is headquartered (or were) somewhere obscure. Oh, Railroads?... Once there were private stations for wealthy people (The equivelent, in a broad sense, of having a telephone rather than using a telegraph office (Yes, I know that some people had their own telegraph office!)), there was a private station in or around Darien Connet*.. and there was one at a large estate near here (.ie).. rant, rant.

Elucidate?
