When I heard this old joke, it inspired me to react to it.
There are, to a first approximation, two types of people.
People of the one type take international politics very seriously, and people of the other type do not.
People of the first type believe that if their country were invaded and conquered by a foreign country, their fate would either be simple extermination, or at least a lifetime of hard physical labor, ending in meaninglessness and futility, because one would have no opportunity to leave anything behind, either enduring achievements or descendants.

There were an abundance of reports of just how miserable life (and rest) was under these dictators. The way the (then, mostly liberal) press behaved when they got that news...
People of the second type believe that if their country were invaded and conquered by a foreign country, it would certainly be regrettable. But while there would be some unpleasantness without doubt, life would, in the end, go on much as before. The most important thing in life, having and raising children, would most emphatically not be taken away by such a conquest.
Can you guess how to tell which of these types a person belongs to? Clue: in most countries, they are provided with separate washroom facilities. And, if you look at the history of war and conquest, going back to wars between savage tribes, or even between troops of colobus monkeys, you will find that both types of people are basically right about their own fates in the event of a defeat.
