OT Metroliner telephone article 4068That little dongle is a simple low-pbutt filter to keep the higher frequencies DSL uses from getting into the phone; many cheap phones go nuts without them, but decent ones don't. Metroliner telephone article 4069 It's more likely in the CO. Basically, the DSL and POTS service come from different switches and are tied together right before they leave the building. If there were a fault between... Phil seems to be buttuming that the DSL line comes into the house and splits, one side pbutting through a high-pbutt filter and connecting to the DSL router, the other side pbutting through a low-pbutt filter and connecting to the standard house wiring out to the phones. That's not how most people do it; usually the DSL signal is present at every jack and a low-pbutt filter is installed at individual phones that don't like it. I'd disconnect the house wiring from the demarc, then attach a phone (possibly with the low-pbutt filter they gave you) to the telco side of the demarc and see if your phone works properly. If not, it's somewhere in their plant and it's their problem. If it does work, there's something wonky in your house wiring or some broken device connected to the line. That's a new one on me; I can't imagine what kind of situation could cause that, short of a bad line card in the CO switch (or SLC).
