I've seen some really badly burned-in units in the subway because they display certain fixed pages a lot, and I've heard that folks are selling used ones on ebay that are terribly burned in from similar advertising. I can't fathom why advertisors are paying more money and using more electricity per eyeball just to see their ads. As a kid, ads were just cardboard posters. Some were lit. Ok. Then they're backlit so they're prettier but that requires more expensive printing onto non-biodegradeable plastic sheets. Then they're on motorized rollers so many ads share the same spot. That's most annoying when they're the entire wall at a sports game. Now flat color plasma panels that I can't afford at home are being used just for advertising in theatres and even the McDonald's menus. That's just technology for technology's sake. Sadly, such chips are usually custom and inside an epoxy blob so there's nothing to see, pull apart, learn or re-use. *if*, however, any common off-the-shelf parts were used THEN hacking-altering-re-using it is possible.
