Muggins, here, didn't know about moisture membranes when he had his barn constructed - so didn't think to ask for black plastic to be laid under the cement slab. I have moisture coming thru the cement floor right next to a row of lovely DEC cabinets.

If anyone has the patience to look at my very slow web page at

and offer any advice - I would be very appreciative

I'm not sure if I am making the problem better or worse

Text from the web page is repeated below

Many thanks Tony Epton

1.. Moisture and crystals are appearing in the first 3 metres of the northern edge of the cement slab.

2..I installed a sub soil drain on the northern side by hand (about 60 hours labour) but it has now been watered by clay particles. (should have used "GeoCloth" around the drainage pipes - but again - didn't quite know what I was doing) As you can guess - a lot of moisture travels through from the hill above. I just haven't got the heart to do this all over again - plus I need an immediate solution this week.

3..I have set up a string of 60W bulbs at floor level to hopefully drive the moisture out of the slab

4..Immediately above the bulbs I have installed a homemade exhaust fan to hopefully dispel the moist warm air immediately to outside the barn. So far two installed, another two still to be constructed.

5..Air expelled without needing to cut through wall. Cross sectional area of large pipe = 7850 sq mm, total cross sectional area of 6 smaller pipes = 1060 sq mm - ie a reduction of cross sectional area by a factor of 7.4 Note condensation

6..Home made exhaust fan is a combination of 100mm sewage pipe and 15 mm reticulation pipe with a 100mm 240 V muffin fan mounted with chip board flange, brackets and pop rivets.

7..This two part expoxy is intended for factory floors with high traffic. Very expensive - $360 for 10 litres which will covery only 20 square metres. Not sure if it will seal the moisture down in the slab - osmotic pressure may just pop the paint off.
