It is far "cheaper" to replace off the shelf stuff than to have a maintenance crew babysitting thousands of machines. Why are you buttuming that all...

No, it is not easier. There are still whole business in place which will do the work to replace an auto. I have to do all of the work for the PC.

Nope. It's the equivalent of driving the car into the crusher.

Then you are unaware of a lot of data. I had two systems; each had their disk die within a week.

Sigh! You only have book value if the gear can be capitalized.

PCs no longer fall into that category. If they are still on the books as capital, then accounting hasn't stayed caught up with times. They are treated as expensed items like lead pencils, etc.

I thought capitalized equipment was depreciated via a selected formula which cannot be changed in midstream. You can't writeoff this stuff unless it's declared lost (that doesn't sound quite correct).

But you cannot repair a PC. That's why they are all replaced at once. You plan when you're going to have the headache; therefore, you can also plan the recovery time from that headache event.

It's like removing a bandaid. You can suffer for hours pulling it off a little bit at a time; or you can yank the thing off and have a huge pain for 1-2 second. The latter allows you to get back to doing the serious stuff sooner and efficiency results are much better.

There is another reason a whole work shop has to replace stuff often. I know of a workshop whose "project leader" is one of those who has to have the latest and greatest. In order for everybody to read computer generated stuff (memos, data, code, email, etc.) when he changes, everybody has to change.

KR Williams But when you have thousands to deal with, the cost of replacing those machines adds up and...

Since the decsions to go to Micpoo products was made when DEC showed all signs that they were getting out of the OS business, the only viable OS available at that time was micpoo. So now they are also in the business model where only the latest will deliver computing services.
