Old PCsenvironmental hazard 3243an old email only partially related (note gold wasn't single user as speculated in the attached) To: Lynn Wheeler Lynn, love and I were involved to some extent with the TSS thing, and to wishful thinking about modifying CP in the way that they wanted to modify TSS. We ahve heard of the Amdahl UNIX stuff. The former Princeton student did a conversion of UNIX while at Princeton to run under VM, but it really ran as if it were in a bare machine. The TSS thing was very different, and so was the proposed CP changes...to provide all sort of functions for the lower levels of UNIX supervisor to do task forking, etc. The Princeton thing never got to a practical working state, but was obviously feasible. Old PCsenvironmental hazard 3244 Yes, I'm familiar with the Amiga archetecture. The connection I was trying to make (and thought... It could be that the version done at Amdahl by the former Princeton student also runs in a virtual machine, and supports multiple users in a virtual machine. Perhaps the Amdahl hypervisor is all that it runs under? Maybe that UNIX takes advantage of the various diagnoses of CP? Another possiblity is that further work was done to make the UNIX single user in nature. This is not too hard to do, since the Bell Sys. Tel. J. had an article about a single user LSX11 version of UNIX. ... snip ... --
