Of course. I was exaggerating a bit to make a point. Perhaps the point was that "man -k" (or, equivalently, "apropos") is the first thing that one needs to learn from "man man" -- the trick being (as ever) to find the one thing that you seek on the man page without necessarily knowing in advance what it is that you are seeking.

Indeed. Couldn't live without it. Of course it often happens that the HOWTO I need lags several versions behind the current version of the software, but filling in the gaps is half the "fun".

I also found Paul Sheer's free RUTE tutorial book to be very valuable when I was first learning my way around Linux a few years ago (especially the administration end of it; I had already been a typical casual university Unix end-user on and off since approximately forever). And of course there are the various excellent books on Linux from O'Reilly Publishing. (I see that "Running Linux" is out in a new edition a few months ago. I might just have to spring the big bucks and finally buy myself my very own copy. Or, I could get my viola bow rehaired...)
