The core philosophy of Unix is that of a toolbox. A toolbox contains the tools required by a tradesman. It doesn't have to contain anything else. easily combined to make...

Thanks for the hint; perhaps I'll give that a try.

This realtime-preemptable-kernel audio stuff is still conceptually largely at the smoke and mirrors stage as far as MY understanding of it goes. I think that the forthcoming 6.06 (Dapper Drake) release is going to have more of it built in to the supplied kernel, so I'm sort of waiting for that before investing a lot of time in tweaking Hoary (5.10), which I've been happily using on my personal desktop machine (which is actutally a laptop).

I've also been playing with recent versions of Planet CCRMA (built on Fedora Core), the idea of which is to buttemble music and audio apps ready-to-go (or nearly so) on a suitable kernel (modulo necessary tuning for specific hardware). ObAFC: I'm a bit familiar with the CCRMA suite of apps as many of the most interesting ones go back to the time when I was playing with them on CCRMA's very own Foonly running WAITS (of blessed memory) -- while I was supposed to be working on a musicology^W^W^W^W^W^W^W^W^W^W usefully broadening my computer-music background while working on a musicology degree.

Thing is, I would like to run my life and my audio-music needs on the same platform, and I'd rather run my life on Ubuntu than on FC. However, I may need to be pragmatic and either resign myself to using both or settle on one or the other.

Yeah. I'm pretty clear on that concept, at least!

This is kind of the price of progress. Shiny new stuff means the old stuff isn't so good any more. I just spent a week trying to get X11 7.0...

Migration can be planned. System crashes cannot. User training??? Define "defect". Do system die? Certainly. Particularly PC clbutt junk, though software (bit rot?) is more likely. YOY does...
