Exactly. But we disageree to what "elegance" is, and what is an old wreck. A little rundown on what I kept and what I let go; so you get to see what I regard as clbuttic, and what I regard as wrecks. The machines I have kept are an SGI Indigo, as those machines are in a separate league. The graphics and sound quality is still outstanding. I'ld take an Indy, if there are any sellers. SGI has made some truly outstanding hardware. Personal Computer" Why haven't the email bobmers been shut down by no 1318 Many. I've enjoyed using their kit for about the last 15 years, and hope to continue doing so (probably a generation... I also kept some early sparc machines (a 4-330 and an IPC). These are personal reminiscences of the machines that built the Internet. The 4-330 was once the "100th most important machine in usenet"; even if it only ran alt. and comp. And then they introduced solaris. Wonder if they ever watched the movie before they came up with that name. I kept a Prime 50-series box. I have a love-hate relationship of that, but keep koming back to the multics heritage; even in it's bowlderized form. I really missied out on Multics. Knew it then, and know it now. I kept a commodore PET (and a C=64). And a wreck of a PC that ran a very early linux, which I kept as-is. So our grandchildren can know how horrid pre 1.0 Linux really was. As an early PeeCee reminisence I kept a Toshiba T1100 laptop. I have let go a ton of solbourne machines, decstations, and a couple of VAXen. And dozens of peecees. And sun's .And the DEC PeeCee wannabee (Rainbow?). This is my take on wrecks. And, don't forget all the Wang and ND cruft I have been ditching through the years. And all the ESMD and SMD disks. I have dispatched around 150 of those. Now I regret I didn't keep some of the power supplies for hobby projects; but gone is gone. And to most of it; good riddance. As I write this, memories of scores of old band printers, floppy boxes, ESMD cables, Kennedy tape drives, more ESMD stuff and anciend comms stuff come back to my memory. The gems we keep come from a mountain of old cruft. We seem to forget. Most of the gems we want to keep are related to software we think fondly of. And then there is SGI. Personal Computer" Why haven't the email bobmers been shut down by no The first Linux 386 I built was compared intensively to a Prime 4450 and a 2755; both machines that cost... Maybe I am just too burned by corporate politics regarding "real unix". Maybe. I see the same burns happening to VMS folks right here. I feel bad whenever I see that. I have put the interesting bits of my old hardware in mothballs, to conserve it. I don't have the space to run it at present. Anyone remember FCC Regs on emissions was Tops10 disk quota quandary 1322 and Only because you're reading my posts through 2" rose-colored glbuttes. Most of the... -- mrr
