Seeking Info on XDS Sigma 7 APL 2882That's right. My first job out of college was going to be working on Xerox APL, but employed by Honeywell as the transition mentioned in earlier posts had already taken place. I interviewed with Floy Ivie in the spring of '77. By the time I started work that summer Floy had left. Honeywell was going to port Xerox's CP-V timesharing OS and all its tools and languages to Honeywell hardware, but was going to recode it all in a higher-level language rather than buttembler in order to meet a rather tight schedule. The story I heard was that Floy didn't think it possible to write a performant APL in a higher-level language. We all know how that sort of argument played out... Re the original post in this thread: I've got the Technical Reference Manual (an internal tech document) and a user manual for Xerox APL but I'm not sure I have the source code anymore. Have you got a Sigma 7 emulator to run it? :-) I do recall Xerox APL as being written in very tightly coded buttembler and that it generated machine code on the fly to perform many primitive operations. It didn't save that generated code though, not enough address space in those days. I'm pretty sure Tom Martin and Steve Ogard worked on Xerox APL with Floy. They also worked on Honeywell CP-6 APL along with Bruce Frost and myself. Probably the highlight of my professional life.
