You could use the analogy of writing utensils. In the days of quill-pens the writer was also the person who made the pen; it was somewhat later that a distinction could be made between the people who made the pens and the people who used the pens. And even later when there's a distinction between people that make the plastic and ink parts and people that buttemble them and people that sell them, etc. ad infinitum.

It takes awhile in any field; the lagging is more noticeable in IT because of the rapid growth-change.

That's bullpoo. That's the kind of thinking that ended up with Windows 2000 being used on military vessels or Linux on airplanes (both of which are just wrong on *so* many levels).

CS is not a "basic" field and in another 50 years it may hold the same position as something like, say the field of acoustic speaker design; involves knowledge of physical sciences, mathematics and psychodynamics, but hardly bears thinking about for John Q Public; it's just there.
