That's an incredibly fascinating topic. I stand corrected on the notion that you need a couple hundred volts or more to drive the plates on a vacuum tube amplifier. Indeed...

Actually, we do have a Ferrari dealership with a showroom here in Vancouver. But we also have lots of yuppies, and lots of snob stereo stores to take their money.

ROTFL. My favourite story is when I went looking for a new turntable to supplement my trusty old Dual 1219. I told the salesdroid that whatever I got, I wanted a Shure V15-3 cartridge so that levels, etc. would match on both turntables (I was doing a bit of amateur DJing at the time). The droid looked down his nose at me and proceeded to start disparaging my cartridge, proclaiming that only his super-expensive model was even worth considering. So I took out the warped album which I had brought with me from the Real World tm and asked him to play it on his turntable of choice.

The stylus jumped right out of the groove.

We walked out of the store while the salesdroid was still stammering, and went across the street to a non-snobby dealer that I felt much better with. My record played perfectly on the turntable which they sold me for much less than the snob store wanted.
