A useful approach is to examine deep history with Antarctic ice cores and sediments. One informal answer, with references attached, is the following from the Royal Society of New Zealand.

These should provide a starting point for anyone wanting to find more technical papers.

They go back further than that, and the sediments go back millions to when Antarctica was part of Gondwanaland.

Then go read.

Kyoto is a failure, because leading polluters are too greedy to accept it's restrictions, and then other countries see the economic disadvantage of complying when others will not, and back away from their acceptance. Unfortunately the problem will not go away, however much it is ignored.
