Everything that we've done and is preserved is a very small collection of the entire work that was done. None of the material shows our trials and errors before we shipped the first verions. None of the material shows what tradeoffs and why we made them.

The software that evolved (remember it evolved) changed with the times so that the computer system could be used within the context of those times. NONE of it is a set of bits of what should be done NOW.

A tape of TOPS-10 has no information about the infrastructure that was used to create that software. Quality checks at the human level never get into the sources. So you can't point at them for an example of how people should do their work. It does give ONE, and only one, example of a snapshot of the results of something that worked at one particular time.

Well, I've been thinking about this for weeks and I still can't write it out. Follow the discussion with rpl and Colonol Forbin. We're dancing around this thing that I'm trying to describe but aren't close to touching it.
