Maybe the idea you're trying so unsuccessfully to express takes more than one sentence.

Do you mean - some ability that would be favorable if inherited by one's offspring - or - some ability (like vision???) that allows men to identify potentially fertile (or something) females by the way their legs look?

I think both are factors. Women with attractive legs are likely to have daughters with attractive legs who would therefore find it easier to attract desirable mates. There's some selection right there. Also, attractive legs,in my experience, appear to be healthy, in good working condition. This means she can carry your kids around when they're babies and run them down when they're in danger, which you won't be around to do because you're drinking six packs in the hunting blind with your buddies. In all likelihood, your kids would inherit whatever nasty genetic quirk should happen to be the cause of her unhealthy, misshapen legs, should she have them, and they won't be able to play football, which is how your sons are supposed to attract teenage girls or ice skate, which will no doubt attract teenage boys. Not that there's anything useful for natural selection in that last.
