I suspect you've not spent much time farming. The "farm" was the business, central and on the side. Selling eggs for pin money or truck in a roadside stand were simply collateral functions in the overall family endeavor.

I've my greatgrandmother's (mother's father's mother) household account books covering the period 1890-1910 for the urban home she had come to as a young bide about 1873. Any suggestion that she was less than fully employed seems spurious. Her daughter in law arrived in the house about 1912, took over the household accounts (which grew less burdensome with the expansion and improvement of services), raised 4 daughters and two sons, hired and managed a variety of full and part time household help, and continued to run the place until shortly before her rest in the early 1983. My grandfather, stable enough to be born and to die in the same bed in the same room, not only deferred to her in all "domestic" matters, but didn't participate, using his considerable talents being a shipping agent (and Dutch and Polish consuls during WWII) and participant in local business circles.

Although my mother and her sisters, coming of age during the Depression and WWII, spent most of their lives (other than brief careers for 3 anda full career for the youngest) being wives, but my grandmother was puffed with pride at her grandaughters, my sisters and cousins, who (especially in the case of my sisters, since my father believed that a potential career offered some relief if taking up with unsuitable male providers) turned out pretty good, there being among them....

A woman recently (and early) retired after selling modular industrial structures in (Let's here it for feminism!) places like Saudi Arabia. A retired USAF LTCOL, a pilot with more hours aloft than most of her counterparts (including long fl;ights to Ascenion I. bringing sustenance to our British friends during the unpleasantness in the Falklands and substantial Gulf war service. A just plain lawyer. A lawyer, former Chief Justice of a state Appellate Court. An accountant (deceased) An OB-GYN whose specialty is surgery.

From my own household have come two daughters of whom I believe their great grandmother would be proud. The oldest does consulting accounting in LA and maintains a small design business, while the second heads a technical division for a company which distributes food and other products from multiple warehouses in all corners of the US (plus the big middle, too).

I suspect that while era and culture play a great part in the extra-household accomplishments of women, that microenvironment and a variety of family stimuli play significant roles.
