Wrong. ATSC fits into a 6 MHz channel quite nicely. You may be confusing rules regarding adjacency with rules regarding occupied bandwidth. In brief, it...
That horse already left the barn. Betamax came out a long, long time ago.
TiVO is working with the cable companies on PVRs that can't fast-forward through commercials, at least the first time. They're also experimenting with replacing commercials in previously-recorded shows with more-current ones. Very slick, if they can get it to work.

I'd expect the more popular programs would charge more, and live content would be highest (with a discount for people who watch it later on demand). Low-budget shows would attract audiences either by charging...
I recognize that commercials are the cost I pay for getting "free" television shows, and I'm willing to tolerate them because I see the benefit. If my provider could customize them to things I'm interested in (or find entertaining) and possibly ensure I don't suffer through the same one over and over, it wouldn't even be so bad watching them. They're just wasting their advertising dollars repeatedly trying to pitch "feminine hygiene products" and medicare replacements to a 20-something bachelor. Better targeting of commercials is a benefit to everyone.
As long as digital content is only available from "criminals", the producers are going to lose money because the commercials will be stripped out. That doesn't mean that digital content itself is bad, merely that refusing to distribute content in users' preferred format gives up a valuable revenue stream.
OTOH, digital distribution allows a different business model where commercials aren't needed at all. I pay about $0.054-hr of television; I'm certainly willing to pay far more than that per episode directly to the studio if they would just sell me the freakin' content. They might not like that, though, since they'd lose all the revenue from shows that people don't like, which they're currently able to spew into our homes thanks to clueless marketeers.
