My grandma was born in 1903. She completed high school, went to college (as did her mother), taught chemistry, worked with the Red Cross and various war agencies, had a radio, then TV show, and then retired in the early 70's. She got married after graduating college and working for a few years. My mom was born in 1938, also went to college, was going to be a journalist, and ended up married with 2 kids, and hated it. She got a job (as a Realtor) when I was 12 and was happier for awhile. It took a divorce, several years as an office manager and then a return to real estate to really make her happy.

When I was 1st exposed to the feminist "ideology" and etc., I had no idea what they were talking about. Almost from birth, my sister and I had been taught that we could do, and be, anything. That we were equal to anyone, and that others were equal to us (altho mom stressed that women were "better" than men, she never explained why). Of course, my mom's vision was that we would be something that paid very well - lawyer, doctor, CEO. My grandmother's vision was that we would do something that made us happy, that we enjoyed, and afforded us a decent wage. Neither one of them expected us to marry and raise children.

I have run into the "Men's Club" atbreastude before, and my current boss has a rather antiquated and "chauvinist pig" atbreastude. I have learned to ignore it and quietly go about doing what I want anyhow. And use his atbreastude when I can to advance myself and my ideas. Sometimes I get ornery and rail against it - it does me little good, as he puts this down to "female hysteria". He's always shocked when he finds me trotting about with a 40+ lb box of papers and not sweating or moaning. Or when I slam my hand in a door and mutter under my breath about self inflicted stupidity and continue working. Goes against his notions of womanhood.

Were I in my 20s, rather than (something older) I might be more offended. As it is, I consider it his problem, not mine, and generally ignore it.
